First time experiencing this author and her amazing talent of writing a story that I just couldn't put down. The innocent love of Lacey and Walker, a crazy mom, filtered in with great friends, insane lovers, and a broken spirit kept this girl up til 3:30 am reading all three books trying to decide how this was really going to end. Such strong emotional characters had me guessing, loving and stressing through it all. I am so glad I didn't have to wait for the next book to come out! Wow, this book takes a dark turn in Lacey's life. It defiantly stirred up lot of emotions from my own past. I recommend this book for anyone who is/or has been touched in their life by some sort of a metal abuser or physical abuser or knows someone that has. Even if one person can learn from this then that is one more then yesterday and one less left behind. Jennifer is an amazingly beautiful person to share even a tiny bit of her soul, her past, her life with the world. It only takes one to start the pattern of change. Its time for a change
The first book in the series, The Truth She Knew, grabbed my attention immediately and held it the entire time. Not only did the second book meet my expectations, Echoes Beneath exceeded them. Each character came to life so vividly true to life, it was as if I personally knew each one and was able to experience the fun and laughter, the tears and pain. I felt as though I were in Lacey's head, clearly understanding why just leaving her abusive situation was impossible and how she was able to rationalize why she should stay. It was difficult to put the book down as each paragraph kept my attention. The story continued to build all the way to the end, leaving me with a feeling of excitement and hope. Once again, I cannot wait for the next book!
J.A. Owenby doesn’t sugarcoat the intensity in a violent relationship. Echoes Beneath was suspenseful and full of emotion. Any person who questions the thought process or sneaky manipulation of an abuser should read this. I also liked how the author included hotlines and websites for help at the end of the book.
I was drawn into the story from the very beginning. When I was away from the book, I found myself lost in thought wondering about the characters and what might happen next. J.A Owenby has a way of reaching out and grabbing her audience, drawing them in, and keeping their attention until the very end. Her book is not just a story; it's an experience! It makes you feel Lacey’s struggle. You also feel the emotions from her friends who so desperately want to help. My mind is racing with what? Who was that? Why? I never saw the ending coming, and I need book 3 right now!
One of the best books I have ever read! The first book was amazing, the second book took things to a whole new level of amazing. It's passionate, intense, and you never know what is going to happen next. The thing I appreciate most from J.A. Owenby, is her ability to write about such a sensitive topic in a raw and realistic way. There is not sugarcoating anything! You learn what it's like to be in a violent relationship and why people don't always leave or it takes them a long time to get away. As I read, I could feel my heart and my head battling it out as to what Lacey should do next. You don't usually feel those types of feelings unless you live through a story like Lacey's, but J.A. Owenby writes in such a way you can't put the book down because you are so connected. I can't wait to read what's next for Lacey as well as the wonderful friends she has made along the way. This book not only teaches you about love and friendship, but what it means to step up and really care about someone. I laughed, I screamed, and I read this book faster than any other book!
As described in my review for Book 1, I flew through this series because I could not put the books down. I thought Book 1 was pretty dark and crazy, but Book 2 took it to a whole other level. (Also, it's set in one of my favorite places, and I love reading the descriptions of her new home.) I found myself really invested in Lacey as a character, because she elicits so much sympathy and frustration, all at once. The situations she finds herself in are so maddening, for her as well as for the reader. I found myself frustrated for her, and at her. Having just read Book 1, and with all that fresh in my mind, I can understand how she got into her situation (I don't want to spoil the plot) but you just want to shake her (as do her new friends in the book) and tell her to learn to stand up for herself instead of always depending on others to save her. Book 2 broke my heart, partly because I cared about what happened to the fictional character, and partly because I know that as outlandish and insane her situation is, it's not far removed from reality for many people (again, trying to be vague so as not to ruin it for future readers). Just read it. It'll break your heart. (Also, more great sex scenes! Hot ones, and super disturbing ones.)
This is a great story!!! It's entertaining, intriguing and painfully honest about what life is like when you live with someone who has a mental health disorder or disease. The writing, plot line and flow are consistent and the characters are tremendously created to feel like the people you know and friends you've had. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that I felt the ending wasn't complete but more of a cliffhanger...a publishing gimmick to sell more books. I understand why that's needed...it is a business based with the primary interest in selling publications rather just publishing them. But I loved these characters and the storyline enough to want to know what happens next so I would buy the sequel without feeling manipulated into but because this book is written well enough that I am emotionally attached to these characters and am not yet ready to part with them!!! Buy this book and share it with friends, especially young woman or those who appear to possibly be in a similar situation!!! You won't regret it or forget it!
